In a significant blow to Mumbai Indians (MI), star pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be sidelined for the team’s upcoming two matches in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025).
The news comes as Bumrah continues his rehabilitation from a lower-back injury sustained earlier this year with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the player himself is adopting a cautious approach.
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Bumrah is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. The 31-year-old has been steadily increasing his bowling workload in recent weeks, but he is yet to receive final clearance from the BCCI’s medical team.

This means he will miss MI’s clash against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 4 and the subsequent home game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7.
"ESPNcricinfo has learned that Bumrah, who has been in rehab since January following a stress-related discomfort in his lower back, is getting closer to returning to action. He has been building his bowling workload in recent weeks at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is understood to be close to taking the final round of fitness tests," the report said.
"Only after he gets the all-clear from the BCCI medical team can Bumrah link up with MI and play in the IPL," it added.
The pacer’s injury woes began during the Sydney Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in January 2025, which also forced him to miss the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Since then, his return to competitive cricket has been closely monitored, with the upcoming five-Test series against England, starting June 28, adding urgency to his recovery timeline.
MI head coach Mahela Jayawardena had initially hinted at Bumrah’s return in April, following an earlier prognosis that he would miss matches in March.

Mumbai Indians Unearth New Gems in Jasprit Bumrah's Absence
Bumrah’s absence is a setback for the five-time IPL champions, who have already struggled in the early stages of the 2025 season, securing just one win in their first three matches. However, it has given a chance to the youngsters.
MI have relied on debutants like Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur and Ashwani Kumar to fill Bumrah's void. Puthur, a left-arm wrist-spinner, and Ashwani, a fast bowler, have done well, taking four wickets each in the tournament so far. Ashwani debuted against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday and claimed four wickets.
